What this is & why it matters

IB World schools are authorised by the International Baccalaureate to teach one or more of its programmes: the Primary Years (PYP), Middle Years (MYP) and the well-known Diploma Programme (DP) at 16–18. The IB is enquiry-led and globally portable, prized for breadth and for university recognition worldwide. Several of Thailand's most established international schools are full IB-continuum schools; others offer the Diploma alongside another senior pathway.

What to look for

Questions to ask

Q. Which IB programmes are you authorised for, and since when?
Q. What is your average Diploma score and pass rate over the last few years versus the world average?
Q. Do you offer the full PYP–MYP–DP continuum, and how do you support the Extended Essay and CAS?
Q. How do you support students who may not thrive under the Diploma's workload?

Red flags

Walk away if you see…
  • Claiming to be 'IB' while only in candidate status for the programme your child needs
  • No willingness to share average Diploma points or pass rates
  • A senior Diploma bolted on with thin staffing and no continuum below it
  • Tuition quoted without the enrolment, deposit and capital fees typical of premium IB schools
05

What it typically costs

IB schools in Thailand sit largely at the upper end of the fee range, with the Diploma years among the most expensive, plus one-off enrolment, deposit and annual extras. The Diploma's exam and registration costs are usually bundled but confirm this. Total the all-in cost across the years and remember that strong IB schools cluster in a few areas, which affects both price and commute.

Frequently asked

Is the IB harder than A-Levels?The IB Diploma is broad — six subjects plus the core (Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, CAS) — which suits well-rounded students but is demanding. A-Levels go deeper on fewer subjects. Neither is 'better'; match the style to your child and compare each school's real results.
Do universities recognise the IB Diploma?Yes — the IB Diploma is recognised by universities worldwide, including the UK, US, Europe, Australia and Asia. Ask each school for its average points and recent university destinations.
What's the difference between an IB school and an IB candidate school? An authorised IB World School can deliver and certify the programme; a candidate school is still going through authorisation and cannot yet guarantee it. Always confirm authorisation for the exact programme and year group you need.
