Overview

How Koh Samui's areas are organised

Samui is a ring island — a single coastal road connects every beach, so choosing where to live comes down to which coast and pace suit you. BAANLYY groups the 12 beaches and districts it maps into six coasts: the busy East Coast (Chaweng, Lamai), the boutique-to-quiet North Coast (Bophut, Maenam, Ban Tai), the convenient North-East Coast around the Big Buddha and Choeng Mon headland, the working South-East Coast fishing village of Hua Thanon, the secluded South-West Coast of Taling Ngam, and the calm, sunset-facing West Coast around Lipa Noi and Nathon. Every area links through to a full guide with rent ranges, transport, schools, hospitals and lifestyle.

FAQ

Koh Samui areas FAQ

Which area of Koh Samui is best for expats and digital nomads?

Chaweng and Bophut are the default choices for first-timers and remote workers — Chaweng for the widest rental supply, malls and nightlife, Bophut's Fisherman's Village for boutique dining and a calmer, upmarket pace. Maenam and Lipa Noi suit anyone prioritising value and quiet over walkable amenities, while Choeng Mon and Taling Ngam suit those wanting private pool-villa living.

What's the cheapest area to rent on Koh Samui?

Hua Thanon and Nathon have the island's lowest studio and one-bedroom rents, typically 6,000–11,000 THB a month, followed closely by Maenam, Ban Tai and Lipa Noi on the quieter north and west coasts.

Which Koh Samui area is best for families?

Maenam, Bophut and Lipa Noi are the most popular family bases — calmer beaches, villa-style living, and easy reach of the International School of Samui, Panyadee and Greenacre. Choeng Mon and Plai Laem add a more upscale, resort-adjacent option minutes from the airport.

Do I need a car or scooter to get around Koh Samui?

Yes, for almost every area outside central Chaweng. Samui has no train or metro, so a scooter (the cheapest option) or a car — essential on the hillier south-west around Taling Ngam — is the default for reaching schools, hospitals and other beaches around the island's ring road.
