Getting around Pathum Thani.

One rail line, a lot of ground to cover — Pathum Thani's students, staff and long-stayers get around on the SRT Red Line, songthaews, motorbike taxis, Grab and private cars. Here is how transport really works around Rangsit, Future Park, Thammasat, AIT and Navanakorn, what it costs, and how to reach Bangkok and Don Mueang airport.

Overview

The short version

Pathum Thani has one piece of true rail transit — the SRT Dark Red Line, which terminates at Rangsit and connects to Bangkok's MRT and BTS network via Bang Sue. Beyond the station itself, songthaews and shared trucks cover short hops around Rangsit and the university campuses, motorbike taxis close the last-kilometre gap, and Grab and Bolt give fixed-price rides around the built-up core. Because the Red Line is a single corridor and Pathum Thani spreads out toward Khlong Luang, Navanakorn and the outer housing estates, most staff and families end up relying on a private car for day-to-day life outside Rangsit. For flights, Don Mueang Airport is about 20–25 minutes away, making it one of the more convenient airports of any city on this platform.

01

SRT Red Line (State Railway of Thailand)

The SRT Dark Red Line terminates at Rangsit and runs south to Don Mueang, Bang Khen and on to Bang Sue / Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in roughly 25–30 minutes. It's Pathum Thani's one piece of true rail transit, and at Krung Thep Aphiwat it connects onward to the MRT Blue Line and, via a short transfer, the wider BTS network — so a Rangsit commuter can reach central Bangkok without a car, provided their destination is near a Red Line, MRT or BTS stop. Trains run frequently through the day; fares are distance-based and inexpensive by international standards.

02

Songthaews (shared shuttle trucks)

Songthaews and shared shuttle trucks run fixed routes around Rangsit, Future Park and out toward the Thammasat and AIT campuses, charging a flat fare of roughly THB 10–20 for a short hop. They're the cheapest way to cover in-town distances without a car — from a condo soi down to Future Park, or from a housing estate out to the main road — though coverage thins out in the evening and away from the main arteries.

03

Motorbike taxis

Riders in numbered vests wait at busy junctions, at Future Park and around the mouths of sois near Thammasat, AIT and Navanakorn, and are the fastest way to close the last kilometre to a condo, dorm or office set back from the main road — typically THB 20–40 for a short hop. Agree the fare before you get on; there's no meter.

04

Grab & Bolt (ride-hailing)

Grab and Bolt both operate around Rangsit, Future Park and the university campuses with app-fixed pricing and GPS tracking, generally THB 50–120 for a short trip. Coverage is reliable in the built-up Rangsit core but thins out toward Khlong Luang, Navanakorn and the outer housing estates, where a motorbike taxi or your own car will usually get you there faster.

05

Renting or buying a car

Pathum Thani has only one rail line and spreads out well beyond Rangsit's walkable core, so for staff commuting to Navanakorn, families in the outer housing estates and anyone who wants flexibility beyond the Red Line's single corridor, a car is the most practical everyday option. Long-term rentals for a small automatic with insurance run roughly THB 10,000–15,000 a month. Phahonyothin Road and the Don Mueang Tollway both connect Rangsit to central Bangkok, though both can be heavily congested at peak times — the Red Line is often faster into the city than driving during rush hour.

06

Buses & vans to Bangkok and the region

Rangsit's bus terminal and roadside stops along Phahonyothin Road run frequent services into Bangkok's Mo Chit (Northern) terminal, plus regional coaches heading north and northeast. Minivans cover shorter hops around the province and into neighbouring Ayutthaya, useful for weekend trips or errands the Red Line doesn't reach directly.

07

Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

Don Mueang Airport sits roughly 20–25 minutes from Rangsit via the Don Mueang Tollway, making it one of the more convenient airports for a Pathum Thani base and the default choice for regional and budget-carrier flights. A taxi or Grab from Rangsit to the airport runs roughly THB 200–350 depending on traffic. Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's main international airport, is a longer drive of roughly 60–75 minutes depending on route and traffic.

FAQ

Pathum Thani transport FAQ

Does Pathum Thani have a BTS or MRT station?

Not directly. Pathum Thani has no BTS or MRT line of its own, but the SRT Dark Red Line runs from Rangsit to Bang Sue / Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in roughly 25–30 minutes, where it connects onward to the MRT Blue Line and, with a short transfer, the BTS network.

How do I get from Rangsit to Don Mueang Airport?

Don Mueang is about 20–25 minutes from Rangsit via the Don Mueang Tollway. A taxi or Grab typically costs THB 200–350 depending on traffic; there is no direct rail link, so road transport is the standard option.

Do I need a car to live in Pathum Thani?

Not necessarily if you're based right around Rangsit, Future Park or a campus and commute along the Red Line corridor. But since Pathum Thani has only one rail line and spreads out toward Khlong Luang, Navanakorn and the outer housing estates, most families and staff working outside the Rangsit core find a car far more convenient for everyday life.

How long does it take to get from Pathum Thani to central Bangkok?

By SRT Red Line, roughly 25–30 minutes to Bang Sue with onward MRT/BTS connections. By car via Phahonyothin Road or the Don Mueang Tollway, plan on 45–75 minutes depending on traffic — the train is often the faster option during rush hour.
