Public university · founded 1964 · Suthep, Mueang Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai University was established by an Act promulgated on 15 January 1964, with its first academic instruction beginning that June -- making it Thailand's first university outside Bangkok and the first provincial university in the country. It opened with three founding faculties (Humanities, Social Sciences and Science) and has since grown into a comprehensive public university spanning medicine, engineering, agriculture, business, fine arts and more.
The main Suan Sak campus occupies a 725-acre site at the foot of Doi Suthep mountain, immediately west of the old city and within cycling distance of the Nimmanhaemin district. CMU runs a number of English-medium international programs alongside its Thai-medium faculties, and its teaching hospital (Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai / Suan Dok) is one of northern Thailand's major referral hospitals.
