Overview

The short version

A Thai bank account is one of the first admin tasks for anyone relocating to Chonburi's industrial core — it is how you pay rent, settle bills through PromptPay QR, and receive a salary paid locally. The good news for this province specifically: because most foreigners here arrive on an employer-sponsored work permit tied to Amata Nakorn, Laem Chabang or a Sriracha-based company, banking tends to be smoother than in tourist-driven cities. Bangkok Bank is the most consistently recommended starting point, Krungsri is a natural fit for Sriracha's large Japanese community, and Kasikornbank or SCB are favoured for their apps. Below: the banks, the documents by visa type, where to go near each district, digital banking, fees, and how to get approved first time.

01

The most foreigner-friendly banks

All of Thailand's major banks operate branches across Sriracha, Amata Nakorn, Laem Chabang and Chonburi City, but they differ in foreigner comfort and app quality. A common setup is Bangkok Bank or Krungsri as the main salary account, plus KBank or SCB for the app and day-to-day spending.

BankWhy expats use itBest for
Bangkok Bank (BBL)The default first account for most newcomers — the largest branch network in the province, comfortable with foreign customers and long-stay visas, and the bank most Sriracha-based Japanese and international staff already use.Retirees, first accounts, employer-arranged accounts
Kasikornbank (KBank)Strong presence at Amata Nakorn and around Sriracha's shopping centres, with the well-regarded K PLUS mobile app. A common second account for day-to-day spending once the main account is open.Digital banking, day-to-day spending
Siam Commercial Bank (SCB)Wide branch network across Chonburi City, Sriracha and the malls near the industrial estates; the SCB EASY app is popular with relocating professionals.Salary accounts, cards, app users
Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya)MUFG-owned and, thanks to that Japanese ownership link, often a natural fit and comparatively flexible for Sriracha's large Japanese community and other EEC-based staff.Japanese community, a strong backup if declined elsewhere
Krungthai Bank (KTB)State-owned, used for government, tax and utility links and some visa-related payments — a useful second account rather than a first choice.Government/utility payments

Documents you'll need

Bring originals, not copies. The item that matters most in Chonburi's employer-driven market is your work permit — it does more work here than almost anywhere else in the country.

DocumentDetailWho needs it
PassportOriginal, plus the photo and visa/stamp pages, valid well beyond account opening.Every applicant
Visa / entry stampYour current visa or entry stamp. In Chonburi this is very often a Non-Immigrant B tied to a work permit at Amata Nakorn, Laem Chabang or a Sriracha-based employer — the easiest route by far.Every applicant
Proof of address in ThailandA condo or serviced-apartment lease, a letter from the landlord or building management, or a Residence Certificate from Chonburi Immigration or your embassy. Most branches
Work permitThe single biggest advantage in Chonburi's employer-driven market — a work permit from an Amata Nakorn, Laem Chabang or Sriracha employer routinely fast-tracks approval and can reduce or remove the need for a separate residence certificate.Non-B / employed
Employer letterA letter confirming your position, salary and Thailand assignment. Many Chonburi branches are used to processing these for HR/relocation teams and will accept one in place of extra paperwork.Employer-sponsored relocations
Certificate of ResidenceIssued by Chonburi Immigration or your embassy; the key document for a tourist-visa applicant or a new arrival without a work permit yet. Can take a few days to obtain. No long-stay visa yet
Thai phone numberA local SIM is effectively required to register mobile banking and receive OTPs — buy one before the branch visit.Every applicant
Opening depositUsually THB 500–2,000 in cash to fund the account and card.Every applicant

What each visa type needs

Chonburi's visa mix skews heavily toward Non-B work permits, unlike beach or retirement destinations elsewhere in Thailand. “Difficulty” below is a rough guide to how much paperwork and branch-shopping to expect.

Visa typeWhat to bring & expectDifficulty
Non-B / work permit (EEC employer)By far the most common route into Chonburi — a work permit tied to a plant, port or corporate role at Amata Nakorn, Laem Chabang or Sriracha makes approval routine, often with an employer letter in place of extra proof-of-address paperwork.Low
LTR (Long-Term Resident)Smooth for qualifying executives and specialists relocating under BOI-linked LTR status; bring the LTR visa and BOI documentation.Low
DTV (Destination Thailand Visa)Workable as a long-stay visa but handled case-by-case; bring passport, DTV, Thai address proof and ideally a residence certificate. Fewer DTV holders relocate to Chonburi than to Bangkok or Phuket, so ask a foreigner-friendly branch first.Low–Medium
Retirement (O / O-A / O-X)Straightforward with passport, visa and address proof; less common in Chonburi's corporate-heavy market than in beach or retirement destinations, but accepted the same way nationwide.Low
Marriage (O) / Thai familyUsually easy with the marriage certificate, spouse's ID/house book (tabien baan) and address proof.Low
Tourist visa / visa exemptionThe hardest category and rare among Chonburi's largely employer-sponsored population. Expect to need a Certificate of Residence and a foreigner-friendly branch such as Bangkok Bank.High

Where to go near Sriracha, Amata Nakorn & Laem Chabang

Branch location matters as much as bank choice. Sriracha town centre and the roads around Bangkok Hospital Sriracha have branches of every major bank well used to foreign, work-permit-holding customers. Amata Nakorn's estate frontage on Sukhumvit Road hosts several branches serving plant staff directly, often with staff who process employer-letter openings routinely. Laem Chabang has branches near the port and industrial-estate gates geared toward shift workers and logistics staff. If you are based in Chonburi City instead, the Sukhumvit corridor and the area around Big C have the widest general selection. Go on a weekday morning, bring your work permit and employer letter, and expect a faster process than at a branch that mostly serves tourists.

05

Employer-sponsored accounts & HR support

Because Chonburi's foreign population is overwhelmingly employer-driven — engineers, managers and technical staff assigned to plants at Amata Nakorn, the port at Laem Chabang, or Sriracha-based manufacturers — HR and relocation teams here are often experienced at supporting new hires through the account-opening process: providing an employer letter, booking an appointment at a branch the company already uses, or sending a Thai-speaking colleague along. If your relocation is employer-arranged, ask your HR or relocation contact before assuming you need to navigate a branch alone; it is frequently the fastest path to an account and the one BAANLYY recommends first when we place relocating staff.

06

Digital banking & PromptPay

Thailand runs on bank apps and QR codes rather than cash. Once your account is open, register the mobile app on the spot — Bangkok Bank's Bualuang, KBank's K PLUS, or SCB EASY — using a Thai phone number for OTPs. Then link PromptPay to your phone or passport number: the free, instant system used everywhere from Sriracha's malls and Japanese supermarkets to Chonburi City's markets and Amata Nakorn's canteens. A Thai SIM (AIS, TrueMove or dtac) is effectively a prerequisite, so buy one before your branch visit.

07

Fees & charges

Thai retail banking is inexpensive. Standard savings accounts rarely carry monthly fees; the costs you'll actually notice are card issue/annual fees and out-of-network or foreign-card ATM charges. Figures are typical 2026 ranges in THB.

FAQ

Chonburi banking questions

Can a foreigner open a bank account in Chonburi?

Yes, and it is generally more straightforward than in tourist-driven cities, because most foreigners relocating to Chonburi arrive on an employer-sponsored work permit tied to Amata Nakorn, Laem Chabang or a Sriracha-based company. That combination — a Non-B visa, work permit and employer letter — is the easiest profile any Thai bank sees. Bangkok Bank and Krungsri (popular with the Japanese community) are the most consistently recommended starting points.

Which bank is best for expats in Chonburi?

Bangkok Bank is the usual first account thanks to its branch network and comfort with foreign, work-permit-holding customers. Krungsri is a strong fit for Sriracha's large Japanese community given its MUFG ownership, while Kasikornbank and SCB are favoured for their mobile apps for everyday spending. Many relocating staff end up with two accounts: one for salary and one for daily banking.

Does having a work permit make it easier to open an account in Chonburi?

Yes — significantly. A work permit tied to an Amata Nakorn, Laem Chabang or Sriracha employer is the strongest document you can bring, and combined with an employer letter it often removes the need for a separate Certificate of Residence. This is one reason banking tends to be smoother for Chonburi's largely employer-sponsored population than for visa-exempt tourists elsewhere in Thailand.

Can my employer or HR team help set up my bank account?

Often, yes. Because so much of Chonburi's foreign population arrives through corporate relocation, HR and relocation teams at Amata Nakorn and Laem Chabang-based companies frequently have relationships with specific bank branches and can provide the employer letter, arrange an appointment, or send a colleague to accompany a new arrival to the branch. Ask your employer's HR or relocation contact before assuming you need to navigate it alone.

Where are the main bank branches near Sriracha, Amata Nakorn and Laem Chabang?

Sriracha's town centre and the roads around Bangkok Hospital Sriracha have branches of all the major banks used to foreign customers. Amata Nakorn's estate frontage on Sukhumvit Road has several branches serving plant staff directly, and Laem Chabang has branches near the port and industrial-estate gates. Chonburi City centre, including around Big C and the Sukhumvit corridor, has the widest general selection if you are based there instead.

What is PromptPay and do I need it in Chonburi?

PromptPay is Thailand's free instant transfer system linking your account to your phone number or ID/passport number, used everywhere from malls to market stalls via QR code. It takes a minute to register in your banking app once your account is open and is strongly recommended — daily life across Sriracha, Amata Nakorn and Chonburi City runs on it.
