Hua Hin sits on the Gulf of Thailand, and its beaches are gentle, shallow and family-friendly rather than postcard-turquoise - which is a big part of the town's relaxed appeal. The coast runs from best-value Cha-Am in the north, through the walkable town beach and calmer Khao Takiab, down to the quiet coves of Khao Tao, boutique Pranburi and the dramatic national-park sands of Sam Roi Yot. Each beach has its own character and maps onto a residential area. Below is every major beach, who it suits, how the water is, and where to live to be near it.

Hua Hin Beach (town)Central · Convenience, families, walkability

The long, gently shelving main beach that runs south from the fishing pier past the big hotels and condos. Shallow, swimmable and famous for its beachfront horse riding, it is the most convenient and walkable stretch, backed by the densest cluster of restaurants and shops - busiest near the centre, calmer as you head south.

Khao Takiab BeachSouth · Calmer swims, condos, seafood

The southern end of the bay beneath Khao Takiab (Monkey Hill), with a calmer, quieter stretch of sand, fresh-seafood restaurants and a wall of beachfront and sea-view condominiums. A favourite of retirees and long-stayers who want the beach and a slower pace minutes from town.

Suan Son BeachSouth · Shaded, peaceful

A pine-shaded, more peaceful beach just south of Khao Takiab, long a local favourite for weekend picnics under the trees. Quiet and natural with calm water, it is the spot for an easy, uncrowded swim away from the busier town sands.

Khao Tao & Sai NoiSouth · Hidden coves, local feel

A small fishing village and a string of sheltered coves between Hua Hin and Pranburi, beside the Khao Tao reservoir and hilltop temple. Sai Noi is one of the prettiest, quietest swimming beaches in the area - residential, calm and genuinely local.

Cha-Am BeachNorth · Best value, Thai-family weekends

The relaxed beach town just north of Hua Hin, with a long flat beach traditionally favoured by Thai families on weekends. Lower rents, deckchair-and-seafood culture and a slower feel make Cha-Am the best-value coastal base in the area.

Live in Cha-Am

Pranburi / Pak Nam PranSouth · Boutique, quiet, stylish

The quiet coast south of Hua Hin, known for design-led boutique resorts, mangrove forest, the Pranburi river and long, near-empty beaches. The pick for privacy, nature and a stylish, low-key second-home or retirement base away from the crowds.

Sam Roi Yot beachesFar south · National-park scenery, day trips

About an hour south, the beaches of Sam Roi Yot ('three hundred peaks') National Park - Laem Sala and Sam Phraya among them - sit beneath dramatic limestone cliffs and marshland. Wilder and scenic rather than resort beaches, they are the area's headline coastal day trip.

Maruekhathaiyawan beachNorth · Quiet, heritage setting

A calm, uncrowded stretch on the Cha-Am side beside the elegant golden-teak Maruekhathaiyawan royal summer palace. Peaceful and scenic, it pairs an easy beach walk with one of the coast's most beautiful historic buildings.

Swimming & seasons

Water, swimming & seasons

01Best season (November-February)

The cool, dry season brings Hua Hin's calmest, sunniest weather and the most reliable beach days - ideal for swimming and day trips. It is peak season too, so weekends draw Bangkok crowds and prices rise, especially around the holidays.

02Kite-surfing & windy season (roughly January-April)

Steady onshore wind makes Hua Hin one of Asia's top kite-surfing and windsurfing spots, with several schools along the town and Khao Takiab beaches. The wind is great for watersports but can make the sea choppier for casual swimming on the busiest days.

03Rainy season & water quality (May-October)

The Gulf-coast monsoon is milder than the Andaman's - usually short afternoon storms rather than all-day rain - and many beach days stay fine, though September to November is the wettest. Hua Hin's beaches are shallow, sandy and family-friendly; the town beach can pick up seaweed or occasional jellyfish, so for the cleanest, calmest swims locals head south to Suan Son, Khao Tao and the Sam Roi Yot coves.

FAQ

Hua Hin beaches FAQ

Can you swim at Hua Hin Beach?

Yes. Hua Hin's town beach is shallow, gently shelving and swimmable, which makes it good for families. The water can occasionally carry seaweed or jellyfish near town, so many residents prefer cleaner, calmer swims south at Khao Takiab, Suan Son, Khao Tao and Sai Noi.

Which is the best beach in Hua Hin?

It depends what you want. The town beach wins for convenience and walkability, Khao Takiab and Suan Son for calmer swims, Khao Tao and Sai Noi for quiet coves, Cha-Am for value, and Pranburi for boutique quiet. Sam Roi Yot's national-park beaches are the best scenery for a day trip.

Is Hua Hin good for kite surfing?

Yes - Hua Hin is one of Asia's leading kite-surfing destinations, with a reliable windy season from roughly January to April and several schools along the town and Khao Takiab beaches offering lessons and gear.

What is the best Hua Hin beach for families?

The town beach and Khao Takiab are the usual family picks - shallow, gentle and lined with restaurants, shops and amenities. Pine-shaded Suan Son next door is quieter and calmer, and the Khao Tao coves are a peaceful local favourite.
