Public university · founded 1964 · Nai Mueang, Mueang Khon Kaen
Khon Kaen University was established in 1964 under Thailand's First National Economic Development Plan, which called for expanding higher education into the regions. Construction of the Faculty of Science and Arts began in June 1964, and the first cohort of 107 students -- 49 in agricultural science and 58 in engineering -- was admitted that same year. The Khon Kaen University Act was enacted by parliament and published in the Government Gazette on 25 January 1966, the date the university officially marks as its founding.
The main campus sits about 4 kilometres from central Khon Kaen in the Nai Mueang and Sila sub-districts, on a site of roughly 9,000 acres (around 5,500 rai) -- one of the largest university campuses in Thailand. KKU has grown from its original science, agriculture and engineering focus into a comprehensive research university covering medicine, humanities, business and more, and its Faculty of Medicine teaching hospital, Srinagarind Hospital, is the major tertiary referral hospital for the wider Isaan region.
