Overview

Every Saturday, Thong Sala's old main road — known locally as "Chinese Street" for its history as one of the town's original commercial roads, and still home to the post office — closes to traffic and fills with stalls. It is the single best-known and best-attended market on Koh Phangan, drawing residents and visitors from across the island rather than staying a purely local affair, and is the market most guides mean when they simply say "the Walking Street." BAANLYY could not independently corroborate claims that a second weekday version of this same street market exists, so we report Saturday only.

Getting there & nearby areas

The market runs along Chinese Street in Thong Sala, an easy walk from Thong Sala Pier — the same town where the island's banks, pharmacies and ferry connections to Koh Samui and Surat Thani are based. It's a natural stop for anyone staying in or near Thong Sala, and a short scooter or songthaew ride from Srithanu, Haad Rin or Chaloklum.
