Overview

The short version

Krabi sits on the Andaman coast in a tropical monsoon climate — hot and humid all year, with daytime temperatures almost always between 25°C and 34°C. What changes is the rain and the sea. The dry high season (November–April) brings sunshine, calm water and the most reliable island-hopping; the green monsoon season (May–October) brings warm downpours, lush scenery, lower prices and a rougher Andaman sea. The single best stretch is December to February; the wettest month is September; the hottest is April. For live rents by area and development, use the BAANLYY Krabi hub.

02

The two seasons

The dry / high season (Nov–Apr) is driven by the northeast monsoon, which keeps Krabi dry and sunny — peak tourist months, calmest seas, and the time most people picture when they imagine Railay and Ao Nang. March and especially April heat up sharply ahead of the rains, with April the hottest month and the Songkran water festival mid-month. The green / low / monsoon season (May–Oct) is driven by the southwest monsoon: warm, heavy showers that often pass in bursts, dramatic skies, the lushest landscapes, the lowest prices and the fewest crowds. September is the wettest month, and October can stay wet before clearing late.

03

Sea conditions & island-hopping

This is the most important section for anyone coming to Krabi for the beaches and islands. The Andaman Sea's mood changes completely between the seasons.

Dry season (Nov–Apr)

The Andaman Sea is generally calm and clear along the Krabi coast — Ao Nang, Railay, Tonsai, Klong Muang and Tubkaak are at their best, and longtail and speedboat trips to Phi Phi, the Hong Islands and the Four Islands run reliably. This is prime island-hopping, snorkelling and diving season.

Green season (May–Oct)

The southwest monsoon pushes swells and rip currents onto the open beaches, and crossings by longtail to Railay can get rough. Some island tours and national-park boat services reduce frequency or pause in the worst weather. Always obey the red flags, swim only where lifeguards post safety flags, and treat a posted warning as absolute.

Rivers & sheltered spots

Krabi Town sits inland on a mangrove-lined river estuary and is sheltered from the open sea, so everyday life there is barely affected by swell — it is the exposed beaches and island crossings, not the mainland, that the monsoon changes most.

Rip currents and boat safety are the real risks here, not the rain itself. The rule is simple: red flag means do not enter the water, and never pressure a boatman to sail in dangerous seas. See our full Krabi safety guide and the beaches & islands guide for detail.

04

When to come — and what to pack

For sun, calm seas and island trips, target December–February; for the best balance of good weather and value, the shoulder months of November and April are hard to beat. If you are relocating rather than holidaying, the green season often brings softer short-term rents and far less competition for the best units.

WhenWhat to pack
Year-roundLight, breathable clothing, strong sun protection, a hat and sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and good sandals or reef shoes for rocky beaches and boat landings — it is hot and humid in every month.
Dry / high seasonAdd a light layer for air-conditioned spaces and cooler December–January evenings; book accommodation, ferries and island tours early, as this is peak demand across the Andaman coast.
Green / monsoon seasonPack a compact umbrella or rain shell, quick-dry footwear, and a dry bag for electronics on boat trips; build flexibility into island day trips and Railay crossings, which are weather-dependent.
05

Weather & choosing where to live

Because the whole province shares one climate, the weather questions that matter for renters are local: drainage, elevation and exposure. Sheltered, riverside Krabi Town barely notices the swell, while open-beach Ao Nang feels the green-season sea most; elevated and inland addresses near Nong Thale and the airport drain quickly. Year-round heat also makes air-conditioning efficiency and cross-breeze worth checking when you view a condo or villa — it directly shapes your electricity bill. FAQ

Krabi weather questions

What is the best time to visit Krabi?

November to April is Krabi's dry high season, with the sunniest skies, the calmest Andaman Sea and the most reliable island-hopping. The sweet spot is December to February, when humidity is lowest and evenings are pleasantly cooler. March is excellent but warming up, and April is hot. If you want lower prices and fewer crowds, the shoulder months of November and April offer most of the good weather at better value.

When is the rainy (monsoon) season in Krabi?

The green or monsoon season runs roughly May to October, driven by the southwest monsoon. Rain often falls in heavy bursts rather than all day, and the province is at its lushest, cheapest and quietest. September is the wettest month, and October can stay wet before clearing late in the month. Many travellers happily visit in the green season for the value and the dramatic skies — just keep island trips flexible.

What are the hottest and wettest months in Krabi?

April is typically the hottest month, with daytime highs around 34–36°C and high humidity ahead of the rains, often coinciding with the Songkran water festival. September is the wettest month, when the southwest monsoon peaks. January and February are the driest and most comfortable months of the year.

Can you still go island hopping in Krabi during the monsoon?

Often yes, but with caveats. In the green season (roughly May to October) the Andaman Sea is rougher and some longtail and speedboat tours — including crossings to Railay and trips to Phi Phi, the Hong Islands and the Four Islands — run less frequently or pause in bad weather. Larger speedboats and ferries handle moderate swell better than longtails. Always check the day's conditions, obey beach warning flags, and never pressure a boatman to sail in dangerous seas.

Does the weather affect where I should rent or relocate in Krabi?

Somewhat. The whole province shares the same monsoon pattern, so the bigger questions are drainage, elevation and exposure. Inland and riverside Krabi Town is sheltered, while open-beach areas like Ao Nang feel the green-season swell most. Low-lying spots can see brief street flooding in the heaviest downpours, and supply is thinner and more seasonal than Phuket, so securing a long lease before high season pays off.
