Phuket International Airport (HKT) is the second-busiest airport in Thailand and the gateway for almost everyone moving to the island. It sits at the northern tip, near Mai Khao and Bang Tao, which means your transfer can be a quick 20 minutes to the northwest beaches or a 90-minute run down to Rawai in the far south. There is no rail link, so your choices are a taxi, a ride-hailing app, the Smart Bus, a shared minivan or a pre-booked private car. Below we break down each one, what it costs, and how long it really takes.

01

Metered taxis & the airport limousine desk

Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits in the island's far north, near Mai Khao and Bang Tao. On arrival you can use the official metered-taxi and airport-limousine counters in the arrivals hall - booths where you pay a fixed, published fare and are handed a slip and a designated car. This is the simplest option late at night or with luggage and a family. Fares are set by distance: budget roughly THB 600-800 to the northwest beaches, THB 800-1,000 to Patong, and THB 1,200-1,400 down to Rawai and the southern cape.

02

Grab & Bolt (ride-hailing)

Grab and Bolt are the transparent, no-haggle way to leave the airport: app-fixed fares, card payment and GPS tracking. HKT has a designated ride-hailing pickup zone - order once you have your bags and walk to the marked point. Prices are broadly similar to the metered taxi but you see the total before you confirm: expect roughly THB 550-750 to Bang Tao and Laguna, THB 700-950 to Patong, and THB 1,100-1,400 to Rawai. Availability at the airport is excellent by day and reasonable late at night.

03

The Phuket Smart Bus (west coast)

The Phuket Smart Bus is the cheapest comfortable way down the west coast. Air-conditioned and tap-card operated, it runs from the airport through Nai Yang, Surin, Bang Tao, Kamala, Patong and Karon to Kata and Rawai. Fares are a fixed THB 100-170 depending on distance, and it runs roughly every hour during the day. It is ideal for solo arrivals travelling light who are heading to a west-coast beach and are not in a hurry.

04

The orange airport bus & shared minivans

A public orange Airport Bus Express runs between HKT and Phuket Town (Bus Terminal / Central Phuket) for around THB 100, useful if you are heading inland rather than to a beach. Shared minivans and transfer desks also sell per-seat rides to the main beach towns for roughly THB 180-250 per person - cheaper than a private car but with waiting time while the van fills and multiple drop-offs before yours.

05

Pre-booked private transfers & hotel pickup

For a smooth first arrival - especially with children, a lot of luggage, or a late-night flight - a pre-booked private transfer or hotel car is worth the premium. You are met in arrivals with a name board, the fare is fixed in advance, and the car takes you door to door. Rates run roughly THB 800-1,000 to the northwest beaches, THB 1,000-1,300 to Patong, and THB 1,400-1,800 to Rawai, often with a larger vehicle option for families. Many condos, villas and long-stay hotels arrange this on request.

06

Renting a car or scooter at the airport

Every major car-rental firm has a desk at HKT, and picking up a car on arrival is popular with families settling in for a long stay. Small automatics run roughly THB 900-1,300 a day (much less long-term), insurance included on the better deals. Scooter rental at the airport is limited and generally a bad idea straight off a flight - Phuket's hills, rain and fast bypass traffic are unforgiving, and it is safer to arrange a scooter locally once you are settled.

FAQ

Phuket airport transfer FAQ

How do I get from Phuket airport to my hotel or condo?

Use the official metered-taxi or airport-limousine counter inside arrivals, order a Grab or Bolt from the designated ride-hailing pickup zone, take the Phuket Smart Bus down the west coast, or arrange a pre-booked private transfer. Avoid drivers who approach you in the terminal - they quote far above the official fares.

How much is a taxi from Phuket airport to Patong?

Budget roughly THB 800-1,000 by metered taxi or Grab, with the trip taking about 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. A pre-booked private transfer runs a little higher at around THB 1,000-1,300 but includes a meet-and-greet and a fixed price.

Is there a bus from Phuket airport?

Yes. The air-conditioned Phuket Smart Bus runs down the west coast from the airport through Surin, Bang Tao, Kamala, Patong and Karon to Kata and Rawai for a fixed THB 100-170. A separate orange Airport Bus Express runs to Phuket Town for about THB 100. Both are daytime services only.

How far is Phuket airport from the main beaches?

HKT is in the island's north, so transfer times depend on where you are heading: about 20-30 minutes to Bang Tao and Laguna, 45-60 minutes to Patong, and up to 70-90 minutes down to Rawai and Nai Harn in the far south.

Should I rent a car at Phuket airport?

For families settling in for a long stay, picking up a car at the airport is convenient and reasonably priced. Renting a scooter straight off a flight is not recommended - Phuket's hills, rain and fast traffic make it one of the island's biggest safety risks, so arrange a scooter locally once you are settled.
