Overview

Phuket Town (Mueang Phuket) is the island's administrative and cultural capital and the one part of Phuket that lives like a real Thai city rather than a beach resort. Its UNESCO-feel Old Town of pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, the Sunday Walking Street, indie cafés and a genuine local food scene sit alongside the practical backbone of the island — government offices, the main hospitals, the big malls at Central Phuket, and most of its international schools nearby.

For residents who prioritise authenticity, convenience and price over beachfront, it is the strongest value on Phuket: rents are the lowest on the island, daily life is walkable and well-served, and the west-coast beaches are a 20-40 minute drive when you want them. It suits working professionals, culture-minded expats, students and budget-conscious long-stayers.
