Prince of Songkla University (PSU) was founded in 1967 as the first university in southern Thailand, named by King Bhumibol Adulyadej in honour of his father, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, Prince of Songkla. PSU grew into a five-campus system covering Hat Yai, Pattani, Phuket, Trang and Surat Thani, each serving a different part of the South.
The Surat Thani Campus was established in 1990 at 31 Moo 6, Makham Tia subdistrict, Mueang district, one of the university's more recently developed campuses. It extends PSU's academic reach into the Gulf-coast/Samui-gateway part of southern Thailand, offering programs distinct from the flagship Hat Yai campus.
