01

What this is & why you'd need it

Health-insurance brokers and providers offer international (worldwide) or Thailand-local medical plans for expats. Foreigners need cover because Thailand's good private hospitals are pay-as-you-go, and some visas (notably retirement/O-A and the LTR) carry a minimum medical-cover requirement. A broker compares plans across insurers; buying direct skips the middleman.

What to look for

Questions to ask before you commit

Q. Does this plan satisfy my visa's medical-cover requirement?
Q. What are the inpatient, outpatient and annual limits, and the deductible?
Q. Does it direct-bill my preferred hospitals, or do I pay and claim?
Q. How do premiums rise with age, and are pre-existing conditions covered?

Red flags

Walk away if you see…
  • A plan that doesn't actually meet your visa requirement (verify the numbers)
  • Vague answers on pre-existing conditions and exclusions
  • Pressure to buy today for a 'limited' discount
  • No clarity on whether it's lifetime-renewable
05

What it typically costs

Premiums vary enormously by age, cover area (Thailand-only vs. worldwide), limits and deductible. Local Thai plans are cheaper than global ones. Some visas set a minimum cover amount — confirm your visa's exact requirement before buying.

Frequently asked

Is health insurance mandatory in Thailand? It depends on your visa. Some long-stay categories (e.g. the O-A retirement visa and the LTR) require minimum medical cover; others don't mandate it. Even when optional, private hospital bills make cover strongly advisable. Check your visa center page for current requirements.
Local or international plan?Thailand-only plans are cheaper and fine if you mostly stay in-country. International plans cost more but cover treatment worldwide and travel. Choose based on how much you travel and where you'd want major treatment.
Broker or buy direct?A broker compares multiple insurers and helps at claim time, usually at no extra cost to you (paid by the insurer). Buying direct can work if you already know the plan you want. Either way, read the exclusions.
