01What this is & why you'd need it
Relocation and moving firms handle the international shipping of your household goods (sea or air freight), Thai customs clearance, and sometimes the full 'soft landing' service — home search, school search, settling-in and visa coordination. Foreigners relocating long-term use them to move belongings and to compress weeks of setup into a managed process.
02What to look for
- Membership of a recognised moving network (e.g. FIDI/FAIM-accredited affiliates) for international standards
- Experience with Thai customs clearance specifically — this is where moves go wrong
- A detailed inventory survey (video or in-home) before any quote
- Transparent insurance options for transit damage and loss
03Questions to ask before you commit
Q. Is the quote door-to-door, and what is explicitly excluded (duties, storage, stairs)?
Q. Who handles Thai customs clearance and what documents will you need from me?
Q. What transit insurance is included, and what's the claims process?
Q. What is the realistic transit time by sea versus air for my origin?
04Red flags
Walk away if you see…
- A firm quote with no inventory survey
- Pressure for a large deposit before a written contract
- Vague answers on customs duties and prohibited items
- No proof of insurance or network accreditation
05What it typically costs
Driven by volume (cubic metres), origin, and sea vs. air. A small shipment by sea is far cheaper than air; full-container moves cost more but suit whole households. Customs duties on certain items are separate — confirm before shipping.
06Frequently asked
Sea or air freight?Sea is much cheaper and standard for households but takes weeks; air is fast and expensive, best for a small set of essentials. Many people air-ship a small 'first month' box and sea-ship the rest.
What can't I bring into Thailand?Thailand restricts or prohibits certain items (some are dutiable, some banned). A good mover advises you up front and handles the customs paperwork. Confirm specifics with the mover and Thai Customs before packing.
Should I move everything?Often no. Shipping bulky furniture across the world can cost more than buying or renting furniture locally. Price the move against local furniture rental before deciding.
