Methodology: each of Chiang Mai’s seven main neighbourhoods is rated 1–10 on seven lived-experience factors — walkability, transit, cafe & coworking (nomad-fit), nightlife, family-friendliness, retiree-fit and value for money — drawn from BAANLYY’s own area research and on-the-ground reporting. The overall BAANLYY Area Score is the simple average of those seven factors, converted to a 0–100 scale. Chiang Mai is inland, so unlike BAANLYY’s coastal city scores there is deliberately no beach-access metric. This is a transparent comparison starting point, not investment, legal or relocation advice — weight the factors that matter to you.

FAQ

Frequently asked

What is the BAANLYY Chiang Mai Area Score? The BAANLYY Chiang Mai Area Score is a transparent 0–100 rating built from seven lived-experience factors — walkability, transit, cafe & coworking (nomad-fit), nightlife, family-friendliness, retiree-fit and value for money — each scored 1–10 from BAANLYY's own area research, then averaged onto a 100-point scale. Unlike BAANLYY's coastal city scores, there is no beach-access factor, since Chiang Mai is an inland mountain city. It is a comparison starting point, not investment or relocation advice.
Which Chiang Mai neighbourhood scores highest overall? On the current overall score, Nimman leads with a BAANLYY Area Score of 70, followed by Old City (69) and Santitham (67). The ranking blends all seven factors, so your personal best area depends heavily on which of them matters most to you — a retiree and a digital nomad will rarely pick the same winner.
Which Chiang Mai area is best for digital nomads and remote workers?Nimman scores highest for cafe & coworking (nomad-fit) at 10/10, thanks to its density of laptop-friendly cafes, coworking spaces, fast fibre and a built-in social scene around Chiang Mai University and the Maya/One Nimman malls. Santitham, one street over, offers a similar nomad-friendly feel at a noticeably lower price.
Which Chiang Mai area is best for families?Hang Dong scores highest for family-friendliness (9/10), with moo-baan villas, gardens, pools and the Canal Road international-school corridor about 20–30 minutes from the centre. Mae Rim and San Sai follow closely, offering similar suburban space with an even quieter, more rural feel.
Which Chiang Mai area is best for retirees?Mae Rim scores highest for retiree-fit (8/10) — a quiet, resort-like countryside setting with mountain views and space, well suited to a slower pace of life. Hang Dong and San Sai are close behind for retirees who still want easy access to malls, hospitals and the city centre.
How should I use the Chiang Mai Area Score?Use the overall score to shortlist, then weight the individual factors that matter to your life — a nomad prioritises cafe & coworking and walkability, a retiree prioritises retiree-fit and value, a family prioritises family-friendliness. Open each area's full guide for pricing, transport, schools and lifestyle detail, and pair this page with the Chiang Mai rental market guide and cost-of-living guide before deciding.
