Krabi's main beach town — the widest choice of long-term rentals, restaurants and services on the Andaman mainland, with longtail boats to Railay and the islands leaving straight off the seafront.
Ao Nang is the practical heart of long-stay Krabi. A compact beach town wrapped around a seafront promenade, it carries the province's deepest pool of rental stock, the most restaurants, dive shops, pharmacies, supermarkets and co-working corners, and the easiest day-to-day life for a foreigner who wants the sea on the doorstep without going fully off-grid. Longtail and speedboats to Railay, Hong Island and the Phi Phi group leave from its beach and the neighbouring Nopparat Thara pier.
It is touristy and seasonal — busy and pricier from November to March, quiet and bargain-friendly in the green season — and it is not the place for a big international-school run or specialist hospital care, which still point toward Phuket. But for most renters arriving in Krabi, Ao Nang is the sensible first base: enough infrastructure to live comfortably, a settled community of long-term residents, and quick access to everything else the province offers.

Ao Nang's centre is walkable, but most residents keep a scooter or car for trips to Krabi Town (about 20–30 minutes), the airport and the northern beaches. There is no rail; longtail boats are the only way in and out of Railay, just around the headland.

For most newcomers to Krabi, yes. Ao Nang has the province's widest choice of long-term rentals plus the restaurants, supermarkets, clinics and dive shops to live comfortably, and a settled foreign community. Families needing international schooling or specialist healthcare, though, often look to Phuket.
Indicative long-term rents run roughly THB 8,000–15,000 for a studio, THB 12,000–22,000 for a one-bedroom and THB 20,000–38,000 for a two-bedroom, with sea-view condos and pool villas well above that. Rates are higher and supply tighter in the November–March high season.
Krabi International Airport (KBV) is about 25–30 minutes by road. Phuket's larger airport and international hospitals are roughly two to three hours away.
The town centre is walkable, but a scooter or car is useful for Krabi Town, the airport and the northern beaches. Longtail boats are the only access to Railay around the headland.
