Thailand is one of the world's top destinations for affordable, high-quality dental and cosmetic treatment — here's how to choose a clinic well and avoid the cut-price traps.

01What this is & why you'd need it
Thailand draws huge numbers of expats and medical-tourists for dental work (cleanings, fillings, crowns, implants, orthodontics) and cosmetic/aesthetic treatments, because internationally-trained dentists and clinics deliver Western-standard results at a fraction of US/UK/Australian prices. For residents it simply means excellent routine dental care is cheap and easy to access; for visitors it's a planned trip. Either way, quality ranges from world-class JCI-accredited hospital dental centers down to bargain shopfront clinics — so the job is choosing on credentials and follow-up, not on the lowest quoted price. This category is about how to judge a clinic, not a paid list of named providers.
02What to look for
- Dentists trained and credentialled to recognisable standards, with experience in the specific procedure you need (implants and orthodontics are specialties, not general work)
- A clean, modern clinic with in-house imaging (digital x-ray, CBCT for implants) and clear sterilisation practice
- An itemised written treatment plan and quote before anything starts, with the brand of implant/crown materials specified
- A realistic timeline — implants and multi-stage work need healing time, so a single short trip is often not enough
03Questions to ask before you commit
Q. What are the dentist's qualifications and how many of this exact procedure have they done?
Q. Can I have the full treatment plan and a fixed itemised quote in writing, including materials and lab work?
Q. What brand of implant / crown / aligner will you use, and what's the guarantee if something fails?
Q. Who handles complications or adjustments after I leave, and is follow-up included or charged separately?
04Red flags
Walk away if you see…
- A price far below every other quote — usually cheaper materials, rushed work or no warranty
- Pressure to commit same-day, or to add procedures you didn't come in for
- No written plan, vague pricing, or no named brand for implants/crowns
- No clear answer on who fixes problems or honours the guarantee after you've gone home
05What it typically costs
Routine dental care in Thailand — check-ups, cleanings, fillings — is inexpensive and rarely needs insurance for residents. Larger work (crowns, root canals, implants, full orthodontics) costs a meaningful sum but is typically far below Western prices, which is why people fly in for it. Always get a fixed itemised quote in writing, confirm what materials and lab fees are included, and weigh the price of any extra trips for multi-stage treatment. Don't choose on headline price alone — a guarantee and competent follow-up are worth more than the cheapest quote.
06Frequently asked
Is dental work in Thailand safe and good quality? At reputable clinics, yes — Thailand is a long-established dental-tourism hub with internationally-trained dentists and modern, well-equipped clinics, especially in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. The catch is the wide quality range: choose on credentials, materials and after-care, not on the lowest price, and you can get Western-standard work for far less. Our healthcare & hospitals guide covers the medical side.
Will my insurance cover dental treatment?Often not — many expat health policies exclude routine dental or only cover it as an add-on, and cosmetic work is almost always excluded. Because routine dental care here is cheap, many residents simply pay out of pocket. If you want dental cover, check whether your health-insurance plan offers a dental rider before you buy; see our health-insurance category for how to compare.
Can I get implants or braces done in one trip?Usually not in one short trip. Implants need healing time between placing the post and fitting the crown (often months), and orthodontics runs over a year or more. Clinics can sometimes stage the work around two visits, but be wary of anyone promising a complex permanent result in a few days. Get the full timeline in the written plan before you start.
